Google Business Profile Checklist for Sacramento Service-Area Businesses
If you go to your customers instead of having them come to you, Google calls you a service-area business, and your profile has to be set up differently from a storefront. The short version: hide your address, list up to 20 real service areas, use your real business name, fill in every service, and keep photos and reviews coming every week.
Every step below follows Google's own help pages, with notes for trades working the Sacramento region. Work through it once, then use the monthly check at the end.
Confirm you are a service-area business, not a storefront
You are a service-area business if you visit or deliver to customers and do not serve them at your own address. Google uses cleaning services and plumbers as its examples.
There is a middle option. A hybrid business serves customers at its address and also travels to them, like a shop that installs on site. Google's rule here is strict: if your location does not have permanent signage, it is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business. A garage behind your house in Natomas with no sign is not a storefront.
One more rule: a service-area business gets one profile for the whole area it serves. Separate profiles are only for separate locations with their own service areas and staff.
Hide your address if customers do not come to you
Google says it plainly: if you do not serve customers at your business address, remove it from your profile. Its guidelines use the example of a plumber running the business from home, who should clear the address.
What does not count as an address:
- P.O. boxes or mailboxes at remote locations
- A virtual office you rent for mail but do not work from
- A co-working desk, unless it has clear signage, receives customers during business hours and is staffed by your team
Google says profiles have to follow these guidelines to avoid suspension.
Set your service areas by city or ZIP, up to 20
Under Edit profile, then Location, then Service area, you can add up to 20 service areas by city, postal code or other area. You cannot use a radius anymore. If an older profile was set up with a radius, Google says you cannot edit it and need to switch to named areas.
Google's other guidance on service areas:
- Keep the overall boundary to about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based.
- Be as specific and accurate as possible.
- Approved edits can take up to 48 hours to show.
For a Sacramento crew, list the cities and ZIPs you actually drive to. If you really work Sacramento, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Folsom and Roseville, list those. Do not add towns where you would turn the job down. If you also want pages on your site for those towns, read how to write service area pages first.
Use your real business name, nothing extra
Your profile name should match the name on your truck, website, invoices and business cards. Google's guidelines say adding unnecessary information to your name is not permitted and can get the profile suspended.
That rules out:
- Keywords or cities, like "Smith Plumbing Sacramento Water Heater Repair"
- Taglines
- Phone numbers or URLs
- Hours, like "Open 24 Hours"
- Legal terms like LLC or Inc., unless you can show real-world proof they are part of the name
Pick the fewest categories that describe your core business
Google's guidelines say to choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business. Pick the primary category that matches what you mostly do, like "Plumber" or "HVAC contractor," and only add secondary categories for services that are a real part of the business.
Ten categories do not make you relevant for ten things.
Add every service you actually offer
Open Edit services. Google suggests services based on your business type. For a plumber, its own examples are "Install faucet" and "Repair toilet." Select the ones you do, then add custom services for anything missing.
A few rules from Google's services page:
- Custom service names cannot include prices or phone numbers.
- You can add a description and price inside each service's details.
- Services can be grouped by category.
This matters more than it looks. When a customer reviews a service business, Google may ask which job you did, and the choices come from your service list.
Get the phone, website and hours right
Use a phone number you control that rings your business, and a local number over a call center line when you can. Google does not allow numbers or links that redirect people to someone else's landing page.
Set your hours to when customers can actually reach you. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.
Write the description for a customer: what you do, where, and what makes you different. Google does not allow it to focus on sales, prices or offers.
Verify the profile
Google says verifying tells it you are authorized to represent the business, so the profile is more likely to show in search. Verification methods are chosen by Google and cannot be changed. Depending on your business they include phone or text, email, and video. Google recommends video verification when you are eligible.
Verify before you spend time polishing anything else.
Add real photos and video, then post weekly
Google lists photos and videos among its tips to improve local ranking. Real jobs beat stock: the crew, the truck, a before and after.
Posts let you share updates, offers and events with a button that links to booking or your site. A weekly job photo update keeps the profile active.
Start a review habit from day one
Prominence, one of Google's three local ranking factors, is partly based on how many reviews you have. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
From your profile, choose Read reviews, then Get more reviews, to copy your review link or download a QR code. Google suggests sharing it on receipts, in thank-you emails and at the end of a chat. Ask after every finished job, the same day. Never offer a discount or anything else in exchange. Google calls incentivized reviews fake engagement and prohibits them.
Then reply to every review. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has the exact ask, reply examples and the full list of what Google bans.
Your monthly 10-minute check
- Service areas still match where you drive
- Hours are current, including holidays
- New services added, old ones removed
- At least four new photos or a post since last month
- Every new review has a reply
- Name, phone and website still match your site and other listings
What results can look like
Our clearest map example is Elysian, a Sacramento tattoo gallery (a storefront, not a service-area business). Their average position across a grid of local Google searches moved from 9.4 to 3.9, reaching number one in Midtown. That came from a full system: a rebuilt site, content, paid social, local SEO and booking automation. Profile basics were part of it, not the whole story.
No one can promise a ranking. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you control is a complete, accurate, active profile. Questions people ask
Should a service-area business show its address on Google Business Profile?
No, if customers do not come to it. Google says to remove your address if you do not serve customers there and to list your service areas instead. Your service area should stay within about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based.
How many service areas can I add to my Google Business Profile?
Up to 20, by city, ZIP code or other area. Google says the overall area should not extend more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based, and radius service areas can no longer be set.
Can I add my city or main service to my Google Business Profile name?
No. Google's guidelines say your profile name should match your real-world business name, and adding unnecessary information like keywords, locations or taglines can lead to suspension.
