Framer vs WordPress for a Small Business Website

Websites7 min readAAntonie Lewis

For most local service businesses with 10 to 40 pages, Framer is the simpler choice: hosting, security updates and speed are handled by the platform, and the site can look custom instead of like a theme. WordPress is the better call when you need a specific plugin, a very large content library, full control of your own server, or you already have someone who maintains it well.

Neither platform books jobs on its own. The pages, photos and booking path do that. The platform decides how much time and money it takes to keep the site alive.

What WordPress does well

WordPress is the default for a reason. WordPress.org says it powers over 43% of all sites across the web. W3Techs, which updates its survey daily, puts it at 40.1% of all websites and 58.6% of the sites whose content system it can identify.

That reach brings two real advantages:

  • You own the software. WordPress is licensed under the GPLv2. You can run it on almost any host, move it, change it and keep a full copy.
  • There is a plugin for almost everything. Online stores, membership areas, complex booking systems, multi-location directories. If your site needs an unusual feature, WordPress probably has a ready-made answer.

If your business runs on one of those features, or you publish hundreds of articles a year, WordPress may be the right home.

What WordPress costs you after launch

The trade-off is upkeep. WordPress's own documentation says you should always update to the latest version and back up the site before you do. Minor and security updates to WordPress itself can install automatically, but themes and plugins are a separate job.

That job matters because plugins are where most of the risk lives. Patchstack, a WordPress security company, counted 7,966 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2024, about 22 a day. 96% were in plugins and 4% in themes. 43% of them required no login for an attacker to use.

None of that means WordPress is unsafe. It means someone has to run it: update plugins, test that nothing broke, keep backups and watch hosting. For a roofer or an HVAC owner, that someone is usually a developer on a monthly plan, or nobody at all.

What Framer does well

Framer is a hosted website builder. You do not install it or pick a host. According to Framer's pricing page, every paid site gets hosting on a global content delivery network (20 locations on Basic, 300+ on Pro), built-in SEO settings and a custom domain. Because Framer hosts the site, there is no core, theme or plugin software for you to patch.

For a service business, the practical wins are:

  • Speed on a phone. Google recommends good Core Web Vitals for success in Search: the main content should load within 2.5 seconds, the page should respond to a tap in under 200 milliseconds and the layout should not jump around (a shift score under 0.1). A light Framer site on a CDN makes those targets easier to hit without a stack of speed plugins.
  • Design that is not a theme. The layout follows your trade instead of someone else's template.
  • Editing without a developer. Framer's CMS lets you update content directly on the live page and from a phone. That covers what most owners actually change: a new photo, a new service, updated hours, a new project or blog post.

That is why we build in Framer. On our page for website design in Sacramento we put it plainly: it is fast on a phone, and it lets us build a designed site instead of a template.

Where Framer falls short

Framer is not the right tool for everything, and it is worth knowing the limits before you choose it:

  • Plan limits are real. Framer's pricing page lists 30 pages and 2 CMS collections on Basic, and 150 pages and 10 CMS collections on Pro, with paid add-ons beyond that. Most service business sites fit easily.
  • Redirects sit on the Pro plan. If you are moving an older site with pages that already rank, you will want redirects, and Framer lists them under Pro, not Basic.
  • Fewer plugins. If you need a deep e-commerce setup or a niche integration, WordPress has more ready-made options.
  • You are on Framer's platform. You cannot take the site files to another host the way you can with WordPress.
  • Editors are paid seats. Framer lists extra editors at $20 a month and content-only editors at $10 a month. Budget for the people who will actually edit.

What it costs on each platform

WordPress itself is free, but you pay for hosting, any premium theme or plugins, and someone to maintain it. Framer's site plans start at $10 a month on yearly billing for Basic and $30 a month for Pro, per its pricing page as of October 2026, and that includes hosting.

The bigger number on either platform is the design, writing, photos and build. We break that down in what a Sacramento website should cost. Ask any designer what the site costs to run for two years, not just to launch.

How to choose in five questions

  1. Do you need a feature only a plugin can give you? If yes, lean WordPress.
  2. Who will update the site every month? If the honest answer is nobody, pick the platform that does not need patching. That is Framer.
  3. How big will it get? Under about 150 pages, Framer fits. Thousands of pages or products, WordPress.
  4. Does it need to look custom? A designed Framer build is easier than fighting a theme.
  5. Are you moving an old site that ranks? Plan redirects for every page that gets traffic, and on Framer that means the Pro plan.

What this looked like for our clients

For the Elysian rebuild, we put the artists and the booking path up front. With paid social, content, local SEO and booking automation running into the new site, Elysian Tattoo Gallery got 109 new client inquiries in 30 days, and its average local rank moved from 9.4 to 3.9. That is a full-system result, not a platform result, but the site is where every one of those inquiries landed.

AIMS Sports Recovery got a rebuilt site, one campaign and on-site content, and saw 20 bookings in 30 days.

How we handle website design

We are a two-person Sacramento marketing agency. Antonie and Teo shoot the photos and video, design the pages and build the site ourselves, all in-house. Most sites launch inside 30 days, with a page per service, click-to-call up top and a booking or quote path that works with one thumb. If WordPress fits you better, we will say so.

What it costs depends on the pages, the shoot and whether booking automation is part of it, so we quote after a free audit.

FAQ /

Questions people ask

Is Framer or WordPress better for a small business website?

For most local service businesses with under about 150 pages, Framer is simpler because hosting and platform updates are handled by Framer and the site can be designed from scratch. WordPress is better if you need a specific plugin, a very large content library or full control of your own hosting.

Is Framer good for SEO?

Yes, for the basics that matter to local businesses. Framer's pricing page lists built-in SEO settings, a global CDN and site redirects on the Pro plan. Rankings still depend on having a clear page for each service, good reviews and a complete Google Business Profile, on any platform.

Is WordPress more expensive to maintain than Framer?

Often, because WordPress needs ongoing updates to its core, theme and plugins, plus backups and hosting. Patchstack found 7,966 new WordPress ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2024, 96% of them in plugins. Framer's plans include hosting, and platform updates are handled by Framer.
